Biography

• Full Name: Bernadette Jerica Ames
• Age: 16
• Codename: Medusa (currently inactive)
• Family: Nathaniel and Magnolia Ames (both deceased), Bianca Sinclair (sister), Beatriz Ames (sister), Brigitte Van Laren (sister), Walden Sinclair (nephew)

Bernie's father died in a car crash before her birth. Her mother, who was much too old to be having a child, died soon after child birth. Thus she was kept as the ward of her sister Bianca Sinclair, who was at the time 25 years old and newly married. Her nephew Walden was born 5 years later. At the age of 12, Bernie's eyes began to change colors, and whenever she threw a tantrum anyone who looked into her eyes suddenly received a headache. While playing with Walden, she grew angry with him and "broke" his arm unintentionally by looking into his eyes. Walden's medical records report no physical damage whatsover, yet swelling occurs and his arm was in pain. Eventually, they discovered Bernie was a mutant, and she was recruited into the Xavier School.

While Bernie doesn't talk to much about her past, this information can be ICly obtained simply by just asking her.

Powers

Bernie is an empath. Thus she can feel what another being is feeling emotionally and physically. This can only be accomplished through eye contact with the other being.

Her eyes also act as a mood ring. When her mood changes, so do the color of her eyes. However, in public she usually wears green contacts to hide them. For a color key go here.

When in a bad mood Bernie can also create the illusion of physical pain on another being. Again, this can only be done through eye contact. The target's body reacts and heals as if it were really injured (i.e. Her nephew's arm took 6 weeks to heal just like any normal broken arm). Bernie's currently learning to take hold of her power and control its intensity with the help of Jean?.

Personality & Other Details

Bernie is an overall friendly, normal girl. She likes to joke around and be silly. Also, she has a rather big appetite for a thin girl of her size. When something is bothering her, she usually hides it and keeps her happy face on.

Bernie is the artistic type. Often she can be seen with her beloved Nikon SLR camera, taking beautiful photos. In her spare time she works as a freelance photographer, which is how she gains her main source of income. While away on vacation she took a painting class. She's fairly mediocre, but she plans to practice at it.

Her other talents include music. She's been taking piano and violin lessons since the age of 4, but when she came to Xavier's she had to stop. Being raised in a French family, she can speak French fluently.

Storyline

• Met Nikki in Chinatown for the first time. Took a picture of Nikki's miserable expression, and then struck up a conversation with her.
• In Starbucks, Bernie first encountered John and Pietro. She found John's lighter interesting and shot a few pictures of it. However, he freaked out, but later on he forgives her.
• Meets Jace in the laundry room for the first time. Nikki informs her about how he and Tyson don't get along, and she witnesses them nearly fight in Salem Center's Ice Cream Parlor.
• While in the Salem Center Library, Bernie runs into Jayven? who was running away because he committed a serious crime by accident. Though the crime he never specifies.
• Adam and Bernie become close quickly, and eventually begin dating.
• Adam and Jace get into a serious fight that tears up the common room. Bernie is distressed.
• Adam tells Bernie about his violent past. Bernie gets to see his violent side first hand, when Adam gets jealous that Bernie was talking to Aero and Jayven. He attacks Jayven. In panic, Bernie involuntarily unleashes her power upon Adam, causing he leg to be "sprained." The situation leaves the two in an awkward relationship.
• Bernie has a session with Jean in the Danger Room that helps her learn control.
• Nikki, Sally, Jean, Bernie, and Rahne investigate a burnt, abandoned warehouse to find out what happened.
• Bernie spends the rest of her 2009 summer vacation in upstate New York, alone in order to relax and work some things out.
• Bernie returns for school. During lunch with Nikki, she learns about a few things that happened between Adam, Nikki, and Faith?. She controls her temper accordingly.

Friends and Enemies

• Nikki: Bernie's best friend and most trusted confidante.
• Adam: Bernie's boyfriend, whom she has gone through much struggles with, but they've been in better shape as of late.
• Sally: Another great confidante. Bernie is convinced that she must be 60 years old in real life because of her wise ways.
• Tyson: Friend of Adam, often found drinking with him. She doesn't know him well yet, but still thinks highly of him.
• John: Sally's boyfriend. Started off rough. When Bernie took snapshots of him, he seemed paranoid of her. But as she got to know him, she learned he is a pretty cool guy.
• Jean?: Bernie's squad leader, and teacher. Is helping her control her powers.
• Brianna: The coolest thing since sliced bread! Bernie has a secret picture of Bri all gussied up, and constantly blackmails her with it.
• Chaz?: Boyfriend of Bri. Crazy ex-marine who is just as funny as his girlfriend.
• Aero: One of Bernie's city friends that she runs into occasionally.
• Betsy: A girl who Bernie calls "Lucy" for reasons she cannot remember.
• Kurt: Blue, fuzzy, and loveable schoolmate of Bernie.
• Jayven?: Another city friend of Bernie, before he disappeared.
• Clarice: A sweet schoolmate of Bernie who she met in the laundry room.
