Born 1982 in the suburbs of North New Jersey, William is the oldest of two children. An only child for almost 9 years, his parents Richard and Naomi doted on their son with love and affection. Both successful professionals--his father a lawyer, his mother a molecular neuroscientist--they made sure that he had the best of everything. This doting, caring nature heightened the shock that occurred when, shortly after his brother Nathan was born, Will's body began to change.
Visible deformities began to occur, starting at his left hand. Soon, his body as a whole began to warp and twist, the bones and tissue growing and stunting without any apparent purpose. They found themselves bounced from doctor to doctor, looking for answers.
A colleague of Naomi, a Dr. Harold Dondershine, heard of the boy's strange case and arranged a visit. It was Dondershine that identified the boy's condition as Proteus Syndrome, the extremely rare affliction which had wracked the body of Joseph Merrick over one hundred years previous. But unlike the tales of old, finding the evil's true name was not sufficient to banish it. The boy's condition continued to worsen.
William continued his education, his parents arranging for the best tutors money could buy. But they could do nothing for their son's horrible pain--both that of social ostracism, and the physical agony which the boy's twisted body was constantly wracked with. He developed a dependence on the opiates which kept the pain in check, trading one for the next in a constant attempt to keep his drug tolerances as low as possible.
It was when he was 16 that he found a glimmer of hope. In his parents' bathroom--one of the few places where there was still a mirror--he had stood, staring at his visage in a mixture of anger, fear and disgust. Even through the painkillers, the pain was horrible. Crying, growling, and cursing, he lost control.
Or rather, he discovered it.
Somewhere amidst all the pain, he found his way to the helm of the runaway ship that was his body. For the first time in years, there was a hand at the wheel which had been spinning dangerously, aimlessly. He took control of the mutations that had wracked his frame, and willed his arms, his hands, his face and bones, back to the way they belonged. Back to the way they were *supposed* to be. When it was over he collapsed, the titanic strain taking an enormous amount out of him.
He woke up two days later in a hospital bed, his worried parents standing in the corner of the room talking in hushed tones with the doctor. With amazement, he realized that, while the pain was still there, it had receded to a dull throb. Rubbing one hand with the other, marveling at the decrease, he saw with a start that these weren't his hands at all. They looked normal. *He* looked normal.
The doctors couldn't explain it, and Will didn't help. The last thing he wanted was another reason to be poked and prodded, examined and considered.
Over the next years, Will blossomed. He pledged to make full use of his rejuvenated body, and at 17 began running, hiking, and playing football. At the same time, he went back to school, excelling in high school and heading to college two years early. At the University of Cambridge, he threw himself equally into his studies and into socializing, relishing the opportunity to finally speak to people in person without being seen as some sort of freak.
His classes pushed his mind and helped further develop his mental strength. At the same time, he continued a search for activities to mirror this development physically. Finding he had no patience for Rugby, Will instead began training in the rapier under Alain North. The strenuous workout developed Will's agility, balance, and stamina, while at the same time giving him a healthy outlet. His decision to join the Cambridge Fencing Team resulted in more opportunities for the social interaction he so craved.
Nights, however, when he was alone, were different. In the darkness, he would experiment. His body was protean by nature, and with guidance it could be directed to change form, color, density, even material. The changes were far from painless, however, and the dependence on opiates never did subside. Each change took a good amount of energy, as well, and he found himself consuming more and more calories a day in order to fuel his experimentation.
Following Cambridge, Will returned home to pursue a law degree from Princeton University. His work during school led him to the world of public interest, and he soon found himself championing the civil rights of those who had been cast down by the system. With the debates leading up to the MRA, he found himself defending not just racial minorities, but genetic ones as well. Through it, he kept the nature of his own abilities a closely guarded secret.
It was an incredible surprise, then, when he was approached by Prof. Charles Xavier. The offer, however, was not one that Will felt could be turned down. Accepting a position as a teacher at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, he packed his bags, and prepared to move to the school's quiet campus.
