Staten Island Landfill

The landfill located at Staten Island, the Fresh Kills landfill, opened as a "temporary landfill" in 1947, The Fresh Kills Landfill covers 2200 acres, can be seen with the naked eye from space and is taller then the Statue of Liberty, at a height of 225 ft. It is situated on the western shore of Staten Island and is made up of four sections which contain fifty plus years of landfill, mostly in the form of household waste. The waste disposed at the Fresh Kills Landfill and the decomposition products of this waste contain numerous chemicals. The chemicals can enter into the environment in a variety of ways: releases into the air from barge unloading and garbage trucks unloading; the cement crushing trucks releases chemical dust into the air; and into the local groundwater by leaching.

Due to the landfill, many people that live on Staten Island and live there for most of their years end up developing respiratory complications at a very young age and also experience other medical issues due to the chemicals and nearby waste in the air and water.

The landfill, although still there, was closed within 2001 after being the target of legal issues with the safety of landfills to nearby neighborhoods and the environment. Toxic chemicals and heavy metals were also released into the nearby water, which tampered with local wildlife and their natural habitats.

After the closing, the site was used solely to sort through the rubble for clues and remains of the World Trade Center after the terrorist attacks in 2001, where barges took the rubble to the landfill. To this day, it lays as a resting place and a memory of that occurred on that day many years ago.

Staten Island is home base to the Brotherhood. Its South Beach was also home to the sea creature plot.
