XMR Wiki FAQ
This is a list of frequently-asked questions for this specific wiki. To post a new question, please include it on this page in bold, started with a number sign (ie. #). To answer a question, include it as double-indented text (-->) below the relevant question.
- What is this thing? What is a wiki?
From Dictionary.com: Any collaborative website that users can easily modify via the web, typically without restriction. A wiki allows anyone, using a web browser, to edit, delete or modify content that has been placed on the site, including the work of other authors. This has been found to work surprisingly well since contributors tend to be more numerous and persistent than vandals and old versions of pages are always available.
In this specific case, it is a collaborative website about X-Men: Retribution MUSH, and about the X-Men in general. What it becomes is ultimately up to you, the end users.
- So I can really just start changing and editing things? Do I have to check with anyone before I do that?
Yes you can, and no you don't. The idea of a wiki is that anyone can change whatever they like. If you do something someone else doesn't like, they can go back in and change it or use the page history function to revert the page back to an earlier version. So don't be shy. Find a page you'd like to change and hit that 'edit page' link up at the top!
- How do I insert a new question?
You'll need an account on our wiki to add a new question. You can get an account easily using our sign up form. Once you have an account and have logged in, return to this FAQ page and chose the edit page option. You will be taken to a text edit view of the page. Go to the very bottom of the page and type in:
# Your question
just replacing the Your question text with your actual question. Do not remove any of the single quote marks or the number sign.
If you're stuck on the formatting, you can just stick your question at the very bottom of the page by just typing it in. Someone will come along and add the formatting for you.
- How do I answer a question?
You need an account to answer questions. See our sign up form to get one of your own. Once you've logged in, choose the option to edit this page. Find the question that you want to answer and immediately below it, type in:
--> Your answer
- What do the little ' and # marks mean?
Those marks are part of this Wiki's markup, which means that the wiki software turns them into something else when it reads the page. Three single quotes in a row () turns text bold, while a pound sign adds an item to a numbered list. You can learn more about markup text at the bottom of the page when you go into edit mode, or you can read about it in detail here.
- How do I make a link to another wiki page?
To make a link, you just need to surround the word with double square brackets. So typing in brackets would create a link to a page called brackets. If you create a link to a page that doesn't exist, there will be a question mark beside it when you save. Clicking on that link will take you into edit mode so that you can create a new page.
Links get a little more complicated because of groups which is how the wiki handles categories of pages (you can think of group as just being another word for category). So all of the links under Theme are in the theme group, and show up in the URL like xmr.dune.net/wiki/index.php/Theme/pagename. If you're creating a link from one theme page to another, it's as simple as just surrounding the word in brackets, but if you're trying to go from a page in the Main group (for example, this page is in the Main group, as you can tell by looking at the URL or at the top of the page) to one in the Theme group, you need to include the group name too, so that your link looks like: Theme/Events. Your link text will still show up as just Events.
This may make a little more sense when you consider the idea that there is a Xavier page under the Characters, Comics, and Movies groups. Each of these is obviously talking about a different version of Xavier. So you need to tell the wiki which version you're talking about.
- Is there somewhere I can play with the commands without having to worry about ruining someone's hard work?
Take a look at our WikiSandbox for a nice blank slate. The entire point of this page is to let people play around with the formatting, so you don't need to worry about making a mess.
You can also use your user page to play with the various options. See the question below about how to get your own user page.
- How do I make a page for my character?
You'll need to be logged in to create a character page. Then go to the characters page and choose the edit page option. Add your character name to the list like this:
* Magneto
which will then add your character name to the list. When you save the page, you should see it there as a link with a ? beside it. Click on that link and you'll be taken straight to an edit view to create your new page.
- How do I add an image to a page?
You can link to images by URL directly and you can format these images through a series of rules. Just put the URL of an image in the wiki page and it will turn automatically into an image. However, it's strongly recommended that you make it a thumbnail, but including the markup %thumb% before the image URL.
Currently, we do not allow users to upload images directly to the server. If you would like an image uploaded, you will need to send it as an attachment to xmrstaff@debbo.org.
- How do I get my own user page?
Once you create an account and log in, you should see a Welcome Name message in the SideBar. Your name will be a link with a ? beside it. Click on that to get to your personal page, which you can then edit to your liking. You can then get back to your page at any time by clicking on your name in the SideBar.
- I've created an account, but I'm not listed on the Users page.
User pages aren't listed on the main page by default. To get yourself listed there, edit the page and add yourself to the list.
- What if I make a mistake?
Nothing done on the wiki is irrevocable. If you accidentally do something you didn't mean to, you can either go back and edit the page again, or you can simply click on the page history button at the top or bottom. This will show all the changes made to the page. You can use the restore option to put the page back to any of its former states. So if you make a big mistake, just go into the history and restore the most recent change.
- What does the little ? beside links mean?
A superscript question mark beside a link means that the page it's trying to link to doesn't actually exist yet. To create the page, just click on the link and you'll be taken directly to an edit screen where you can type up the contents of that page.
- Someone's created a character page for me and I don't want one.
Because anyone can create any content on this wiki, sometimes information about your character might be posted by someone else. We allow players to post what information is already publicly available in your +finger, but if someone has posted details you don't wish to share, you can simply log in and edit the page to remove the offending content yourself.
If you do not want a page about you or your character to exist at all, edit the page to replace all the text with delete. This will remove the page from the server. Do NOT delete pages other than ones for your own character or those you have created.
- I want to include an explanation of how to do something on this FAQ or a how to page. How do I show the markup used without having it just format the text when I hit save?
To show markup without having the markup actually go through and change the text, you can surround it with [=text=]. Anything inside of [==] is just displayed exactly as it is. So to show someone how to make italics, you want to type [=italics=]. It will show up on the page as italics instead of italics.
If you want to make the text bold to show someone that this is what they want to type in, you can surround the whole thing with the bold markup. Type: [=italics=] and it will show up like italics.
- I want to add a new link to the SideBar, but it looks awfully complicated. How can I safely add it?
To create the nested menus (so that when you're visiting the Characters pages, you see only those sub-menus on the SideBar, and so on), we had to put in place a number of conditional statements that make the SideBar look very complicated. If you're just trying to add a whole new point to the menu (one that will always show up), you can just add it to the list under the proper heading; just make sure you don't stick it between after any statement on the preceding point. To add a sub-menu, you need to get into the conditional branching, which is a little beyond the scope of this FAQ.
In this case, or if you just can't follow this, you can always put a request on the requests page for the new link to be added and someone who is a little more comfortable with the code will do it for you.
- I'm linking to a page that I know exists, and yet my link keeps coming up with a ?. What's going on?
Most likely, you're trying to link to a page in a different category without telling the wiki that. For instance, if you're editing a plot page and trying to refer to a character page, linking straight to Xavier will bring up a broken link because the wiki is looking for a Plot page about Xavier. You need to tell it to look in the characters category by putting the category in the link too: Characters/Xavier. The category name will not show up in the final link text; it will just say Xavier.
If you know you've got the category information right, and the link is still pointing at a non-existent page, make sure that you haven't made a typo or error in the name of the page. For example Xavier will not work because the page is called simply Xavier. You don't need to worry about spacing, though. You can access the NewYorkCity page with just: York City. The wiki will figure out what to do with the spaces.
- Someone's added a rude comment to my character page. How do I remove it?
Anyone can add, edit, or remove any or all of the comments at any time. Click on the 'leave a comment' link and then edit the page to look how you want.
- How do I add a comments field to a page that doesn't have one?
If you want to allow for comments on a particular page, you have a few ways of doing so. To make it look similarly to the comments sections on the Characters pages, cut and paste the following into the very bottom of the page (doing this on a page that already automatically shows this comments section will cause it to appear twice):
<<
----
!!!!Comments:
(:include Comments.{$Group}-{$Name}:)
%right% '-Leave a comment-'%right%
Alternatively, you can just provide a link to a comments page by including the following anywhere on the page:
<< Comments Page
The comments page will not actually exist until someone adds the first comment.
- If a page automatically has a comments field added to it, is there some way for me to diable or change it?
For pages like the ones in the Characters group that have the comments section added by default to the bottom, you can disable these by adding to the bottom of the page:
(:nogroupfooter:)
You can then create a link to your comments page using the instructions above or just leave comments off entirely.
- I think the pages in XYZ category should have comments enabled. How do I do this?
Comments are enabled across an entire category through a GroupFooter. Only advanced users should try editing GroupFooters. If you do not know how, your best bet is to leave a comment on the Feedback page and someone will see to putting your suggestion into place.
- I created a page but people keep using the wrong name to link to it, resulting in links to non-existent pages. How do I make these links point at my page?
If someone's just made a mistake in the link, you can simply go in and edit that page to fix it. However, if you find people are consistently linking to the wrong page (eg. everyone keeps using NYC when the page is actually called New York City), you can create a NYC page that redirects to New York City. To do this, click on one of the wrong links to create a Grid/NYC page, and then put into it:
(: redirect correct page :)
where correct page is the page that does exist. In this example, you'd want to type (: redirect NewYorkCity :) on the NYC page. Then anyone going to NYC will be automatically forwarded to NewYorkCity instead.
- Is there an easy way for me to track changes made to the wiki?
The AllRecentChanges page tracks all the changes made to the wiki. You can subscribe to a newsfeed of these changes to get notified whenever a page is updated by going to
OR
depending on the type of feed you'd like. If you have a paid LiveJournal account, these feeds can even be added right to your friends page.
Alternatively, if you only want to track one type of page (eg. all the Characters pages), you can see that group's recent changes page by going to:
(you can substitute any group name for Characters)
To create a feed from one of these pages, just add ?action=rss or ?action=atom to the end of the URL, like:
- Can I add character pages for other people?
You can add whatever pages you'd like. However, we ask that you not include any information for other people, beyond what can be found in their +finger. Anything you've learned from RP or logs is off-limits unless they give you the go-ahead.
- How can I place a link to a spot on the same page? (ie. anchor links)
Anchors work so that someone clicking a link in one place on the page will be automatically scrolled to another spot on the same page. These are most often used to make tables of contents at the top of pages.
To place an anchor (ie. where the link will go to; the chosen section on the page), use the markup #name. Then to create a link to that spot, you can use the format: Link text. Then when someone clicks on Link text, they'll be taken to the spot on the page where you've marked #name.
- Do I have to have a character on the game to join the wiki?
While the foremost purpose of this wiki is to provide character, theme, and grid information to our current and prospective players, we don't insist that you play on the game to take part. If you've an interest in the X-Men and would like to help out with our canon pages, feel free.
