XMR news files
We've had a few requests for the news files to be reproduced here. This is a work in progress, so please bear with us.
Instructions: If you are a player adding to the news files, all single-entry top-level news files (i.e. 'news aim' only has one entry but 'news characters' has multiple entries), can go below the horizontal line. Multiple-entry top-level news files get their own page (see 'news characters' an example).
Aim
Here at XMR, we endeavor to keep a friendly, open atmosphere. We strive to promote creative roleplay. We discourage cliques and exclusive attitudes, instead aiming for an atmosphere where all are welcomed equally.

Channels
We have a number of channels here at XMR in order to help everyone find a place to belong. If you would like to see a channel added on a certain topic, just send an @mail to *STAFF or post it on the Suggestions bboard.
- Public - The ubiquitous Pub chan. New players are added automatically. You can discuss anything here, but try to keep it from getting too spammy.
- Guest - Guests are automatically added to this channel upon connect. It is meant for wizards and volunteers to answer Guest questions /only/.
- Spam - The spam chan is designed to be for, well, spam. Anything goes on this channel, and automatic notifications are given when a new player is approved.
- Help - The channel for anyone to ask and answer questions. New players and old players alike are invited to join and partake in asking or helping.
- Movie - For discussion of the X-Men and other movies. X2 is not a spoiler here, so beware.
- Comic - For discussion of the X-Men and other comics. Anything published is no longer considered a spoiler.
- Sexual Innuendo - For any discussion that is risque and not age-appropriate. Only adults should join this channel, but we're not going to police it.
- Elsemu - For discussion of any other MU* games.
Full public channel list here!
As well, each team will be given its own channel upon approval, but you must be on the team to join.

MRA
The Mutant Registration Act is in effect but remains voluntary at this point. While mutants are strongly encouraged to register their powers with the MRA, there is not currently any penalty for remaining unregistered.
The government reserves the right to maintain private, secure records of all mutants registered with the MRA. These records are not shared publicly and are released to law enforcement agencies only with court order. They may, however, freely be used within the government for the purpose of statistics, crime prevention, and tracking of trends or individuals. It may also be used to offer specialized services and resources at a later date.
Any person with mutant powers convicted of a crime, whether it is related to their mutation or not, will be registered with the MRA automatically. This applies even to minors, and those whose crimes have been pardoned.
Mutants registering are given a registration photo ID card which details briefly the nature and scope of their powers. They are advised to carry this on their person at all times, and this may be used at such times as the person needs medical attention while not able to notify the hospital of the mutation themselves, or is otherwise unable to inform police, fire, or medical personnel of their status and any potential risks involved.
OOC: If you wish to have a character registered under the MRA, you do not need staff approval to go ahead with this. However, we suggest you use +char/upgrade to add a new flaw or spec, depending on how your character will be approaching his registered status. You may also want to update your +finger information (see '+help finger' for instructions).

Theme
In our newest incarnation, XMR rolls back the clock a little on our previous theme. The year is 2008. The Mutant Registration Act, which would require all mutants to register their powers with the government or face penalties, is currently under debate. Draft after draft has been written and revised, and about the only thing that the proponents and opponents can agree upon is that they're adamant and unwilling to compromise.
The presence of mutants was brought to the attention of the world seven years ago in a landmark speech by then Senator Kelly. Since then, tensions have only grown higher. And as the MRA looks to be nearing its final draft, they have nowhere to go but up.
Will mutants eventually be made enemies of the state, treated as dangerous criminals simply because of a genetic quirk? Or will pro-mutant rights rally and ensure that all people, sapiens and superior alike, are treated as equals under the law? Only time will tell.
Already there have been rumblings of violence, mutants attacked, mutants attacking. New York City, with its reputation for diversity and its masses of people the better in which to blend, has begun to attract all sorts: radicals, mutants simply looking to be left alone, people who want to help somehow.
And so the scene opens on our fair game...

Year One
X-Men: Retribution is a strictly Year One game. This means a few different things. First of all, and most obviously, this means that we do not follow any of the history of the comic books ('canon'). Rather, we are set in a world roughly equivalent to a futuristic version of our own (see 'news theme' for more information). We may take inspiration from comic book storylines at times in our own plots, but it is never to be assumed they will work out in the same way as they did in canon. Rather, it will always be up to how the characters manage to shape it.
This also has a few effects on what we are expecting from FC and OC applications, detailed below.
Background
As explained in 'news characters continuity', we do not request that your feature character background follow the given history of the character in the comics at all. You may use some or all of it, if you wish, but there are no exceptions made simply because 'that's the way it was in canon'. Certainly feel free to use it for inspiration even as an entire framework for your game character's history, but you should always try to put your own twist on it. If nothing else, changes likely will be necessary to make the character adaptable to our game world and with the theme.
Powers
Because this is a Year One game, we ask that all characters start off at relatively low levels of power. We strive to keep a certain balance between characters as well as give plenty of room for each character to 'grow into' their powers through IC training and RP. When writing up your powers for your application, you should always try to bear in mind in what way those powers can grow through time. We don't allow characters who have powers of such a level that any training would pretty much put them on the level of destroying the world. Even characters with more power-training in the backgrounds than others should still be at a fairly low level in the scale of their absolute capabilities.
