Posted in a small, left-wing, independent publication:

Citizens continue to go missing at an alarming rate throughout New York, police reports indicate. From the poorer downtown neighbourhoods, these reports continue to filter in. So far the missing seem to be almost entirely comprised of visible or known mutants residing in the slums, shelters and shanties on the wrong side of town.

Police remain skeptical of this unknown threat. "These people are transients, runaways. They live outside society. It's not uncommon for the homeless to pack up and move to a new area. So if they left this time without telling anyone, so what? It's a big city. We can't be expected to keep track of them all," said one officer on the condition of anonymity.

But those close to the missing tell a different story. A green woman known only as "Grenouie" disappeared several weeks ago from her home on Coney Island. "Grenouie lived for her work. No way would she just disappear without telling us. We're like her family," said a distraught coworker, a snake charmer with the "Sideshow by the Seashore" performing group.

Other friends and family make similar claims, certain that their loved ones wouldn't simply up and leave without telling them. Police, however, remain firm that there will be no official investigation until they find indications of foul play.

"We're following up on some leads, but let's be serious here. We're talking taxpayer money. We have a responsibility not to throw it away every time some homeless person decides to try begging on a new street-corner. We aren't Social Services, so unless there's been an actual crime, there's nothing we can do."

(Not directly linked, but has some political tie-in.)

Last night, Midtown Manhattan was thrown into chaos in the wake of what some suspect is yet another mutant-oriented crisis. A man calling himself Soundtrack singlehandedly conducted a robbery of a local Radio Shack, emptying out the cash registers as well as taking nearly $50,000 worth of high-end home electronics, including items not for sale.

According to witnesses at the scene, including Carl Anderson, ten year veteran of the New York Police Department, the criminal had some sort of advanced technology at his command, blaring loud music throughout the alercation and somehow deflecting any attacks that went his way. Officer Anderson is currently recovering from a gunshot to the leg, as a bullet from his own gun was somehow reflected back upon him when he tried to take Soundtrack down by force. The assailant also utilized shockwaves that put 18 others into the hospital with minor injuries, and some claim he used laser beams as well, though conflicting reports suggest those shots may have come from the crowd. Complicating matters, Soundtrack somehow disrupted all wireless communication in the vicinity during his assault, which delayed police and medical assistance until he had already escaped.

The NYPD has declined to classify this as a mutant crime, as the man clearly had some technological assistance and there is no proof whether mutant powers were involved, but public opinion is another matter entirely. In Washington, the event appears to be icing on the cake for more than one politician. Senator Brandon Angstrom (I) of Connecticut revealed in a press conference today that he has called for a new vote on the Mutant Registration Act, and claims to have assembled a coalition of political figures across party lines that will be sufficient to update the Act from a voluntary registration to a mandatory requirement for all individuals of mutant birth. "Was this Soundtrack character a mutant?," commented Senator Angstrom. "We have no idea, since it's doubtful he would have chosen to register. With mutant registration mandatory, we'll have a much more efficient way of tracking down those who use their mutant abilities to heinous ends."

Senator Angstrom has declined to comment on how the U.S. Government will enforce mandatory registration.

September 3, 2011:

In the days following the mutant attack on a 7-11 in Clinton, clean-up crews have been sent to try to dislodge and remove the melted wreckage of a van which was destroyed by at least one of the mutants on the time of the incident. Foreman George Fellows was on the scene today to explain what the hold-up has been.

"Well, that's a lot of steel," he explained. "To melt that down the way it was, it takes a huge heat source. My crew couldn't even go near it for days. The cops had it barricaded for public protection, but now it's cool enough that we can start our work."

He went on to say that the melted steel had indeed fused with the pavement and that the job was going to be "much larger than originally expected". There was some speculation that the parking lot may need to be dug up a bit to finally get it all out, then repaved.

The owner, who has asked to remain anonymous, was outraged. "These muties come in here and tear up my lot and no one's doing anything to compensate me. Customers can't get into the lot, so they're turning away. How am I supposed to do business now?" he was heard to say.

Fellows has confirmed that the clean-up could take another week or two just for the removal, and perhaps a couple of weeks for the repaving.

(more to come)
