The Sea Creature
a.k.a. Cthulhu, the sea monster, Squiddy
Summary
During a summer festival at South Beach on Staten Island, a huge creature with a body like a whale and tentacles like a squid came ashore and menaced a crowd of people. Mutants from Xavier's School eventually fought the creature back into the water. At this point, a psychic voice announced to all present, "The first seal has been broken." Since then, aggressive sharks of a breed rarely seen this far north have plagued nearby beaches. Several characters have investigated where the sea creature went after the incident on the beach. He isn't particularly hard to find, but his circumstances are mysterious, to say the least.
Characters
In attendance at the sea creature's first appearance were several members of Xavier's School, a few members of the Brotherhood, and a few Independents.

News
The news story on the event was as follows:
Witnesses reported a sea creature of unknown nature surfacing off shore during the annual Mermaid Parade & Sea Food Festival held on South Beach in Staten Island Friday evening. The creature, described as something like a cross between a whale and a squid only 'significantly larger', attempted to beach itself to the shock and panic of the crowd. The appearance of the creature was either directly caused by or resulted in multiple mutant attacks, both upon the crowd and upon the creature. Numerous people reported an experience of extreme vertigo as they moved without their own volition from one point on the beach to another.
Youth violence was cited by several witnesses as a cause or indirect additional stress upon the situation, citing a pack of mutants who robbed a refreshment stand as pushing their way aggressively through the crowd; another young adult was seen striking a beachgoer with what appeared to be a bat or cane. The victim, William Jefferson, suffered severe cranial bleeding and was rushed to a hospital. His family asks any witnesses to the assault call the police tips hotline.
Traffic was snarled at the same time by an effect which struck stoplights across the city in what police and Homeland Security refer to as a highly coordinated attack. Homeland Security is being assisted by the FBI in investigating this matter, and anyone with any information is urged to come forth.
Meanwhile, an effect noted in the general beach area is currently being attributed to mutant malice geared towards creating panic and to which five deaths caused by stampeding and crowd riots have been attributed. Witnesses reported hearing a bell and then a voice speaking words with distinct religious overtones. The Archdiocese of the Greater New York area has stated that while the matter is being looked into, it is not being regarded as a miracle at this time and there should be no reason to panic; that it is 'highly probable' that the matter is a mutant issue. The Roman Catholic Church has not taken an official position on mutants at this time.
Five deaths and thirteen severe injuries were reported due to crowd riots and panic due to the appearance of the sea creature. The Marine Biology Institute of New York is presently working with U.S. Coast Guard officials in efforts to track the creature, which has been described as a truly unknown specimen.
The mayor's office has stated that a press conference will be held on Wednesday to discuss the rising prevalence of mutant violence, while adding that the Department of Homeland Security has things well in hand as per recent events. In the meantime, there is a general curfew on Staten Island; residents are urged to be off the streets and in their homes by no later than eight pm in efforts to further the investigation and regain calm amid anti-mutant tensions.
