Game FAQ

This is a list of FAQ for the game. For questions about how to use this wiki, please see our XMRWiki FAQ, which also includes instructions for adding questions and answers.

Make sure that you add your questions in the format: # '''Question'''
Make sure that you include answers in the format: -->Answer

From new players:

  1. How long does it take an app to get processed?
We aim for a maximum process time of 3 days for each stage of the app process. Usually we take less time, though on occasion, it may take a little longer. If you haven't heard back about your app after 3 full days, you may want to get in touch with staff to make sure you've submitted it properly.
  2. When are staff usually around?
Staff's times vary, although evenings EST are generally a good time to try to catch us. Sometimes we're on but we're 'dark' because we're busy working on things. This means that we don't show up as online, but we can see everything said on the Guests channel.
  3. How can I get in touch with staff if I have a question?
If we're 'dark', we can still see things seen on the Guests channel, so if you have a need to talk to staff, put in a request on the channel (be as detailed as possible), and one of us will get back to you if we're around. If you still can't get a hold of us on the game, you can send us an email to xmrstaff@debbo.org.
  4. Can I go ahead and app something on the restricted list if I want to?
No. As stated in the 'news characters restricted' file, you MUST talk with staff BEFORE you submit a restricted application. Even then, unless you have a compelling reason or a way to make the character work within our theme and limits, your chances of getting a green light are slim. These characters are restricted for a reason, so we tend only to grant exceptions in the rarest of circumstances.
  5. Can I apply for something on the overused list?
The rules around the overused list are a little more lax than the restricted list. You may app for an overused concept without needing to talk to staff first. However, unless you've put a new twist on the concept or it's one necessary for an FC (in that it's integral to the core of the character, for example, Jean Grey needing to have telepathy), we may deny on the basis that the concept is overused. Try getting creative and coming at it from a new angle, or try a different concept entirely.
  6. How do I know which comic characters you already have?
You can view all approved FCs on the game with the command '+fcs'. Additionally, you can see if any FCs have been approved at the web-app stage but not yet finished their on-game chargen (in which case we won't accept further applications for them) with the command '+apps'.
  7. Do I have to read ALL the newsfiles?
Yes. We understand that there's a lot of information there and reading them all takes time. While we're glad you're eager to get going, with a MUSH being a text-based environment, a lot of reading just goes with the territory. Believe us, it took more time and trouble to write them all than it'll take to give them a read, so take the time and go over them all properly. It's in your own best interest to be fully informed before putting in the time on an app.
  8. Who can I talk to about a character idea?
You'll need to talk to app-staff about your character ideas. However, we cannot give you any sort of guaranteed approval until we've seen the actual finished application. So while we can give you an idea as to whether or not your concept should work within the scope of the game, it still comes down to how exactly you write it up.
  9. How many players do you have?
I don't know exactly how many players we have, but as of February 20th, 2007, we have 73 approved characters. A number of our players play more than one character, so an exact count would be hard to come up with. You can view all approved characters with the command '+approved'.
  10. How many people are usually online in a night?
This varies greatly from night to night. On a quiet night, we may get as few as 6 or 7 people on at one time, but on busier nights, we've gone up into the 20s. The best way to help the game stay active is to be on and active yourself. It's amazing how much of a snowball effect one person can have.
  11. When is the game busiest?
The game tends to be busiest in the evenings and night EST during the week. Very generally speaking, our logins seem to be highest on Monday nights and then gradually taper off throughout the week, with weekends being quietest.
  12. How long has this game been open?
The game originally opened its doors in December 2003 and ran through 2004 before closing down for a hiatus in early 2005. The game officially re-opened December 17th, 2005. You can view an exact count of how many days have passed since our opening by visiting our website (http://xmr.dune.net) and looking up at the top of any page.
  13. What sort of characters do you need?
This is a hard question to answer succinctly. Long answer short? All sorts! If you're looking for something a little more specific, you should take a look at our Wanted bboard ('+bbread 7'), the Wanted Characters object in Limbo and the Guest Starting Room, and the Requests board on our forum (http://www.debbo.org/xmr/viewforum.php?f=3).
  14. How familiar do I have to be with the comics to play here?
Since we're a Year One game, you don't need to be familiar with the comics in order to enjoy the RP on XMR. So long as you have some idea of the general theme (mainly that certain members of the population have been gifted with superpowers thanks to a mutation in their DNA), you should be able to get along just fine by reading our newsfiles.
  15. Help! I'm completely new and have no idea how to do anything on a MUSH. OR What the heck is a MUSH?
    See our tutorial.

From returning players:

  1. The grid is large and confusing. Are there any ways to make it easier to navigate?
Indeed there are. +citymap brings up an ANSI map of the main part of the city. Typing +citymap/A shows all the buildings in neighbourhood A on the map. +citymap/all shows all the buildings in all the neighbourhoods. You can also use +transit when in NYC to pull up a list of transit stops. +ic/list is a quick way to jump to some of the main points on our grid as well.
